Police Department
East Greenwich Police Department
The East Greenwich Police Department employs 34 police officers, an animal control officer, parking control officer, 5 dispatchers, an administrative assistant and a secretary. The officers have received CPR, Automatic Emergency Defibrillator and first aid training.
The department also has a roster of special officers and community service officers.
The Department has a complete Bureau Criminal Identification unit, a Traffic Accident Re-constructionist and a Tactical Special Response Team. Many officers are graduates of the University of Rhode Island Criminalist School, with training in scientific investigation, photography and fingerprinting.

East Greenwich Fire District
East Greenwich’s fire protection and emergency medical services are provided by the East Greenwich Fire District. The EGFD is a separate municipality with full taxing authority. It was established by charter from the State of Rhode Island in 1797.
Fire Tax Billings and tax collection services are provided by the Town of East Greenwich in order to afford residents the convenience of quarterly payments
The Fire District has 36 full time Firefighter / EMT-Cardiacs , who provide 24 hour coverage 365 days a year.
There are two fire stations, one on Main Street and one on Frenchtown Road. They operate 5 pieces of fire fighting apparatus, in addition to two Advanced Life Support rescues and a fire / rescue boat in Greenwich Bay. Both fire engines are also capable of conducting Advanced Life Support measures.
Monthly meetings, open to taxpayers, are held at the Town Council Chamber on the fourth Tuesday of each month. An annual meeting to vote on the budget and elect the Board of Fire Commissioners is held on the third Monday of June at Swift Gym.

Department of Public Works
The Department of Public Works is located at 111 Peirce Street. The Phone number is 886-8618. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
The Department’s responsibilities are as follows:
Operation of the wastewater treatment plant and of the transfer station.
Maintenance of all Town Roads.
Collection of municipal refuse.
Operation of municipal buildings and street lights.
Maintenance of street signs.
Building Inspection.
The Department of Public Works is the liaison between the public and the various divisions. Questions concerning street maintenance, snow removal, street signs, drainage problems, sidewalks and minimum housing complaints should be referred to this department, as well as questions concerning building, plumbing, electrical, sign, swimming pool and stove permits. All permits pertinent to building are issued from this department and it is also involved with subdivisions from inception to final approval.
Questions and problems concerning public sewers should be referred to the sewage treatment plant at 886-8649.
The schedule of services for the department of public works is as follows:
Transfer Station – located on Crompton Ave. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m and Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. A permit is required. East Greenwich residents with a valid vehicle registration may obtain a permit at the Department of Public Works office. Items accepted included municipal waste, recyclables (blue bin and green bin items), yard waste and metal from East Greenwich Residents only. Used motor oil and filters are also accepted.
Trash Collection – The town provides collection Monday to Friday. Call the Department office for your route day. Holidays will delay the trash day one day for the remainder of the week.. Refuse must be placed in a metal or plastic trash can and left at the curb on collection day. One heavy item is allowed each week w/exceptions. Appliances are collected once a month by appointment only.
Recycling Program – The Town provides weekly collection of recyclable materials (the same day trash is collected) i.e. metal and aluminum cans, some plastics, glass and newspapers. Call the Department office for your regular route day. Recyclable materials must be left on the curb by 7:00 am in the blue and green bins, which can be obtained at the DPW office.
Civic Center (Swift Gym)
The Swift Community Center, formerly known as Swift Gym, is located at 121 Peirce Street. The building contains a large gymnasium, a senior meal site, game room and computer room that are used for Town recreation and senior programs. Dog Licenses and Leash Law
State law requires all dogs 6 months and older to be licensed annually. The fee to license a dog is $8.00. A current rabies certificate is also required.
Licenses can be obtained at the Town Clerk’s office at 125 Main Street during regular business hours. A special licensing period is held each year in April. For more information call the Town Clerk’s office at 886-8606.
A leash law adopted in 1978 requires that dogs be kept under restraint at all times. The law states: an animal is under restraint when it is leashed, within a motor vehicle, on the property of its owner or keeper or on the property of a person other than the owner or keeper provided such person is agreeable to the animal’s presence.

Water
Water, derived mainly from the Scituate reservoir, is distributed by the Kent County Water Authority. Most developed sections of Town have water connections, although many homes west of Route 2 depend on wells. The Kent County Water Authority is located at 1072 Main Street in West Warwick. East Greenwich Free Library
Located at 82 Peirce Street, the library is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm, and on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. It is handicapped accessible. The East Greenwich Free Library has a circulating collection of over 65,000 items, including printed books, audio book recordings, magazine and newspaper subscriptions and movies for both children and adults. The popular fiction collection containing mysteries, science fiction, large print books, young adult titles and of course children’s books, also offers all of the new bestsellers. Titles can be reserved either online, using the automated card catalog, or by calling. With 21 computer stations available to the public and the wireless entry system supplying connections for personal laptop computers, the library provides access to the electronic card catalog, online research databases and the internet. There is a substantial compilation of reference materials, designed to assist in research queries, and the Rhode Island History and Genealogy Room houses an outstanding variety of items for specialized studies. The Children’s Department hosts several weekly story time sessions, plans featured programs throughout the year and conducts an annual Summer Reading Program. The library’s Community Room provides space for cultural and educational events and can be reserved for use by non-profit groups.
East Greenwich Human Services & Senior Services
The Town of East Greenwich Department of Human Services provides basic needs assistance to East Greenwich residents. Through a network of local providers and partnering social service agencies, the department connects residents with services such as food assistance, clothing, utilities, furniture, career counseling, and other forms of support. Select programs require participants to be income eligible. The Administrative office is located in Town Hall, 125 Main Street, on the first floor. Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. For more information, call 886-8638.
The Town of East Greenwich Department of Senior Services provides lunch and recreational programs to individuals ages 55 and older. The senior meal sites and the majority of programs are held at St. Luke’s Church, located at 99 Peirce Street. Lunch is served Monday – Friday at noon.. Reservations are required by Thursdays for the following week and can be made by calling 886-3232 or 886-8669. the suggested lunch donation is $3.00.
Ongoing senior programs include art classes, a biking club, bingo, bridge, a choral group, computer classes, hi-lo jack, line dancing, mah jong, nurse clinics, reflexology, a scrabble club, sit to be fit, tai chi, yoga and a walking club. Educational presentations on elder health and safety are offered each month. Senior volunteers assist with activities and the meal site. Anyone interested in volunteering can call 886-8669. the Senior Services offices is located on the first floor of the Town Hall at 125 Main Street. Hours of operation are 8:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday. For more information call 886-8669.
Senior Services also offers transportation to East Greenwich residents age 55 or older. The fee is $2.00 per round trip service or $10.00 for a one month unlimited-use pass. The senior van transports residents to and from the meal site and programs Monday – Thursday, grocery shopping on Thursdays and retail shopping as well as special trips on Fridays. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 886-8669. For transportation to other local destinations such as hair salons, banks or doctor’s appointments (East Greenwich only) reservations are required at least one day in advance.
