Town Services & Facilities
Police Department
The East Greenwich Police Department has 30 officers, a parking control officer, animal control officer, six dispatchers, an administrative assistant, a secretary and 14 special officers. All officers are trained in all aspects of law enforcement.
The department has a complete Bureau Criminal Identification unit, a Traffic Accident Reconstructionist, Drug Abuse Resistance Education Officer and Tactical SWAT Team. A majority are graduates of the University of Rhode Island Criminalistic School with training in scientific investigation, photography and fingerprinting.
A Bike Patrol covers the waterfront during the summer and works special events. The department runs a Citizen's Police Academy twice a year in which citizens receive demonstrations on police training, patrol procedures and have the opportunity to ride along on patrol.

East Greenwich Fire District
East Greenwich’s fire protection and emergency medical services are provided by the East Greenwich Fire District. The EGFD is a separate municipality with full taxing authority. It was established by charter from the State of Rhode Island in 1797.
The Fire District has 36 full time Firefighter / EMT-Cardiacs , who provide 24 hour coverage 365 days a year. There are two fire stations, one on Main Street and one on Frenchtown Road. They operate 5 pieces of fire fighting apparatus, in addition to two Advanced Life Support rescues and a fire / rescue boat in Greenwich Bay. Both fire engines are also capable of conducting Advanced Life Support measures.
Monthly meetings, open to taxpayers, are held at the Town Council Chamber on the fourth Tuesday. An annual meeting to vote on the budget and elect the Board of Fire Commissioners is held on the third Monday of June at Swift Gym.

Department of Public Works
The location of the Department of Public Works is 111 Peirce Street. The Phone number is 886-8618.
The Department's responsibilities are as follows:
Operation of the wastewater treatment plant and of the transfer station.
Maintenance of all Town Roads.
Care of all public grounds done by parks and grounds.
Make, replace and erect street signs.
Collection of municipal refuse.
Operation of municipal buildings and street lights.
Maintenance of street signs.
Building Inspection.
The Department of Public Works is the liaison between the public and the various divisions. Questions concerning street maintenance, snow removal, street signs, drainage problems, sidewalks and minimum housing complaints should be referred to this department, as well as questions concerning building, plumbing, electrical, sign, swimming pool and stove permits. All permits pertinent to building are issued from this department and it is involved with subdivisions from inception to final approval.
Questions and problems concerning public sewers should be referred to the sewage treatment plant at 886-8649.
The schedule of services for the department of public works is as follows:
Transfer Station - located on Crompton Ave. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m and Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Glass, newspapers, cardboard boxes, yard waste and other items are accepted. A permit is required, which may be obtained at the Department's office during regular business hours.
Trash Collection - The town provides collection Tuesday to Friday. Call the Department office for your route day. Monday Holidays do not change the trash day. Refuse must be placed in a metal or plastic trash can and left at the curb on collection day. One heavy item is allowed each week w/exceptions.
Recycling Program - The Town provides weekly collection of recyclable materials (the same day trash is collected) i.e. metal and aluminum cans, some plastics, glass and newspapers. Call the Department office for your regular route day. Recyclable materials must be left on the curb in a labeled container, which can be obtained at the DPW office.
Civic Center (Swift Gym)
The East Greenwich Civic Center, commonly known as Swift Gym, is located at 111 Peirce Street. It houses a large gymnasium used for the Town recreation program. There is also a stage. For information on rental, contact the Department of Public works at 886-8621.
Dog Licenses and Leash Law
State law requires all dogs 6 months old and older to be licensed annually. The Fee to license a dog is $8.00. A current rabies certificate is also required.
Licenses can be obtained at the Town Clerk's office at 125 Main Street during regular business hours. A special licensing period is held each year in April. For more information call the Town Clerk at 886-8606.
A leash law adopted in 1978 requires that dogs be kept under restraint at all times. The law states: an animal is under restraint when it is leashed, within a motor vehicle, on the property of its owner or keeper or on the property of a person other than the owner or keeper provided such person is agreeable to the animal's presence. Water
Water, derived mainly from the Scituate reservoir, is distributed by the Kent County Water Authority. Most developed sections of Town have water connections, although many homes west of Route 2 depend on wells. The Kent County Water Authority is located at 1072 Main Street in West Warwick. East Greenwich Free Library
The East Greenwich Free Library has a circulating collection of approximately 53,000 books, over 100 magazine and newspaper subscriptions and a significant collection of audio books. The popular fiction collection is kept up to date, including new best sellers, all of which can be reserved online or by telephone. The collection includes mysteries, large print books, science fiction, young adult fiction and children's books.
Popular reference materials include ValueLine investment survey, Morning Star Mutual funds, General Laws of Rhode Island, Consumer's Reports. The library also houses a Rhode Island History and Genealogy collection. A notary public is available.
Professional librarians are available to provide information assistance and bibliographic instruction. A children's librarian holds story time sessions and plans programs for children throughout the year. Special accommodations will be made for the handicapped. A Friends of the Library group sponsors fundraising activities and cultural events of community interest.
The library is a member of CLAN, the state-wide library network. In addition, there are nine internet workstations available for public use and individual training is available by appointment. Online database access and e-mail is available.
Located at 82 Peirce Street, the hours are Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
