Recreation

Would you like to increase your life expectancy, reduce the stress in your life, lose some weight, meet new neighbors, enjoy the local landscape, spend time away from the computer and videogames, participate in safe, affordable children's games, join other senior citizens on excursions, or just feel good about yourself? Then the Parks and Recreation Department is the place for you. There are many more benefits available. The current flyer lists various athletic, cultural, educational and social events..
East Greenwich offers the community a year-round comprehensive program. It is the Department's policy to present a varied program that provides enrichment, physical well being and a chance to participate for tots, youths, teens, adults and senior citizens.
Three main brochures are distributed, listing the Fall sessions, Winter / Spring and the Summer session. Additional flyers are sent out with special events and activities, including school vacation programs, the Halloween Parade & party, etc. The brochures are also available at the Parks and Recreation office, Town Hall and the Library or by logging on to  www.eastgreenwichri.com .
Programs for tots, youths and teens are intended to introduce and develop leisure skills in a variety of areas (instructional, pick up nights, leagues, social, crafts, etc.). Adult programs include men's, women's and co-recreational groups, with pick-up athletic nights, formalized leagues, fitness and social programs. Family activities are offered through summer concerts, the Halloween Parade & Party, children's performances, Arts on Main and other town-wide events.
The Parks & Recreation Department also schedules and maintains the town and school athletic and recreational facilities. East Greenwich provides recreation facilities such as tennis courts, basketball courts, a skate park and athletic fields as well as passive areas such as playgrounds, parks and open spaces.

East Greenwich Golf and Country Club

A semi-private club, located at 1646 Division road, with facilities for members and the public. Members are entitled to continuous golf tournaments and lockers. Also available are a snack bar and lounge, open daily. The club is closed in January, February and March. For more information call 884-5656.


Goddard Memorial State Park

This 489-acre park, operated by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, is located in the nearby Potowomut section of Warwick. The park has a beach with bathhouses and concessions, picnic facilities with fireplaces and tables, playing fields, 14 miles of riding trails, fishing and boating facilities, and a nine-hole golf course with clubhouse and concession.
The park is open year-round. A restored carousel building is now a performing arts center that is available for rent. Park office 884-2010. Golf Course 884-9834.


Greenwich Club

The Greenwich Club is principally a family oriented summer club, operated under the direction of a board of governors for the enjoyment of members and their families. It provides a number of adult activities in the summer and off season months.
The clubhouse, a 19th century mansion, is situated on spacious grounds where stately old trees provide a shaded area for picnics and barbecues. In addition to the clubhouse, there are facilities including a main pool, kiddie pool and bathhouse.

Kent County YMCA

The Kent County YMCA offers a wide variety of programs for all ages-from yoga, aerobics, personal training, and indoor cycling to swim lessons, dance, art classes, and community clubs. Aquatic, sports, parent-child, teen and older adult programs are available, as well as Prime Time, which engages kids in constructive activities while parents work out or take a class. Programs are designed to enrich quality of life and build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Family nights are held regularly, along with family-oriented special events, such as Halloween at the YMCA, Healthy Kids Day, and Breakfast with Santa.
The YMCA is centrally located at 900 Centerville Road (Route 117) in Warwick. Facilities include a swimming pool, locker rooms with saunas, gymnasium, state-of-the-art fitness center, separate personal fitness center, community rooms, tennis courts, jogging and hiking trails, ponds, picnic areas, skate park, and the brand-new Okey Falls Spray Park for innovative outdoor water fun. The YMCA also offers special-needs/handicapped-accessible shower, locker and toilet facilities.
A major provider of childcare in the Kent County community, the YMCA also offers Y's Owl Nursery School, School's Out School Age Child Care. NAEYC-accredited Y's Owl Nursery School has served preschoolers in the community for over forty years. School's Out, the YMCA's before- and after-school child care program, offers many sites throughout the community, one of them at Meadowbrook Farms School. School's Out offers supervised enrichment activities until 6:00 p.m. and operates during school vacation weeks and summer vacation. Camp Ok-Wa-Nessett, the only day camp in Kent County accredited by the American Camp Association, serves approximately 900 children per day in the summer with outdoor, sports, arts, and adventure camps for preschoolers through teens on the YMCA's 117 wooded acres.

Yacht Club

The East Greenwich Yacht Club is a private organization for boating enthusiasts, located on Water Street. The Club offers slips, moorings and launch service. Banquet rooms are available for members and guests on special occasions.
The Yacht Club operates year-round. There is one annual business meeting.

Youth Activities

Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America is a comprehensive youth development organization with the aims of citizenship, character development, personal fitness and ethical awareness. The programs are as follows: Tiger Cubs for first grade boys, Cub Scouts for boys in grades 2-5, Boy Scouts for boys in grades 6-12, and Explorers for young men and women in grades 8-12.
The program takes place in local Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout Troops and Explorer Posts. Programs are administered by the Narragansett Council (covering most of Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts) and the Shawomet District (one of 8 districts in the council, covering Kent County). The Council also operates several camps to support local units, including Yawgoo Scout Reservation in Rockville, Camp Aquapaug in South Kingstown and Sandsland on Block Island and Camp Cchalot in Playmouth, Massachusetts.

Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's pre-eminent organization for girls with a membership of more than 3.5 million girls and adults. Today, as when founded in 1912, GSUSA helps cultivate values, social conscience and self-esteem in young girls, while also teaching them critical life skills that will enable them to succeed as adults. In Girl Scouting - and its girl-only environment-girls discover the fun, friendship and power of girls together.
The program is delivered through troops comprised of five age levels: Daisies (Grades K-1), Brownies (Grades 1-3), Juniors (Grades 3-6), and older girls grades 6-12. Individual memberships are offered to girls who cannot attend regular troop meetings. East Greenwich Girl Scouts are part of Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, Inc., which serves all of Rhode Island and some nearby communities in Massachusetts and Connecticut. The Council also operates six camping facilities, including Camp Hoffman (resident) in West Kingston and Camp Nokewa in North Kingstown, which provide summer camp programs for the East Greenwich area.

Little League

The East Greenwich Little League provides a supervised program of competitive baseball and softball under the rules of Little League, Inc., Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Rainbow

The International order of the Rainbow for Girls helps promote self-esteem and leadership in young women ages 11-21. Members learn the importance of home, family and service, gain valuable public speaking skills and attend meetings presided over by girls their own age, guided by adult advisors.
The purpose of Rainbow is to promote effective communication, leadership skills and service to humanity. Rainbow girls have many fun activities and opportunities to make lifelong friendships and can apply for various scholarship funds available to those who meet the academic qualifications.
East Greenwich Assembly # 4 meets every first and third Saturday of the month at the Masonic Center on Division Street. For more information call 463-6343.

Soccer Association

The East Greenwich Soccer Association was founded in 1977 to encourage and promote the game of soccer in East Greenwich for interested boys and girls, ages 4 through 15. There are co-ed and all-girls teams.
Basic individual skills, as well as the ideas of good sportsmanship, loyalty, courage and safety are an integral part of the program.
