Art, Music & Theatre
Academy Players
The
Academy Players, organized in 1955, provide quality community theatre
and a place for the mutual exchange of interest and ideas among those
who enjoy the art of stagecraft. The Players produce three shows
annually at the Greenwich Odeum, hold workshops for members and publish
a newsletter.
Memberships are available to individuals, families,
senior citizens, patrons and high school students. Membership includes
a ticket for every show and participation in all social events of the

Art Club
The
East Greenwich Art Club is open to artists statewide. Membership
includes contemporary and traditional artists as well as sculptors and
specialists. Prospective members must submit three works to a jury for
consideration.
The club sponsors an annual show and awards prizes to those judged best in the competition.
Meetings are held at 7:00 pm the first Tuesday of each month, except
during July & August, at Harborhill Place, 159 Division Street,
featuring demonstrations on various artistic methods. Visitors welcome.

Greenwich Odeum
Located
in the historic Greenwich Theater, this performing arts center is now
in its 11th season. Using the concept of Total Theater, the Odeum
blends a variety of the performing arts, from dance and drama to jazz
and folk. Professional presentations range from the critically
acclaimed National Shakespeare Company to the touring company of
Forbidden Broadway, jazz greats Keiko Matusi and Nicholas Peyton and
folk legends Tom Rush, Tommy Makem and Patty Larkin. Local groups like
Academy Players frequently perform there.

Music on the Hill
Music on the Hill's Great Performers Series brings nationally acclaimed
musicians to the intimate venue of St. Luke's Church in East Greenwich.
Subscriptions and individual tickets are available for the four-concert
2005-06 series featuring pianist Jason Hardink, The Borromeo String
Quartet with pianist Meng-Chieh Liu; The Lewin/Muresanu piano/violin
duo, and jazz vocalist Marcelle Gauvin and her quartet. Music on the
Hill also presents a juried scholarship competition for aspiring high
school musicians. Concerts are Sundays at 4 p.m, For tickets, donor

Daughters of the American Revolution
The
General Nathanael Greene Chapter DAR was organized October 1895 and
this year celebrates 112 years of continuous and active membership. The
Chapter upholds and maintains the objectives of the National Society,
DAR, founded in 1890 which are Historical, Educational and Patriotic.
Membership
is open to any woman at least eighteen years of age, lineally descended
from a man or woman who aided in the cause of American independence. Assistance is available for lineage and genealogical research.

East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society
The
East Greenwich Historic` Preservation Society was founded in 1967 to
help preserve the architectural heritage of East Greenwich, its history
and customs and to encourage the preservation and restoration of
buildings and sites of historic significance. Headquarters is the old
Jail, built in 1795.

Kentish Guards, Rhode Island Militia
The
Kentish Guards, Rhode Island Militia, chartered in 1774 as an
independent military company to protect Kent County, today continues
to: "preserve the military traditions of our forefathers". It is
dedicated to maintaining an appreciation for the past, while providing
services to the state and local community. The Guards are seen annually
in East Greenwich parades. Meetings are held every Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
at the Armory at the corner of Peirce and Armory www.kentishguards.org.
Kentish Guards Fife and Drum Corps
The
Kentish Guards Fife & Drum Corps serves as the "field music" of the
Kentish Guards Militia, attending parades, civic and military functions
and fife and drum musters. As the premier fife and drum corps in Rhode
Island, they have traveled extensively from Missouri and Michigan to
Virginia and Vermont as well as to Switzerland. They have performed
with the Black Watch Regiment at Gubernatorial Balls and in the movie
"Mr. North". They are also a leading member in the company of Fifers
and Drummers, an organization of 120 fellow fife and drum corps in the
United States, Canada and Europe.
Men accepted as members must be
at least 14 years old. Ages of current membership range up into the
70s. Instruction on fife is available, even on a beginner's level; bass
drummers should be able to read music and have some experience or
training; snare drummers should already have training and practice in
rudimentary drumming.

Knowles House
Owned
by the Kentish Guards, the Knowles House at 100 Peirce Street, was
built in the early 1850s by John T. Knowles and his wife. It is best
known for the accomplishments of their son Samuel, which include
serving as President of the East Greenwich Town Council for 13 years.
Although technically considered a Greek Revival building, the Knowles
House has very strong influences from the Italinate style. The large
monitor which caps the house was rebuilt after being destroyed in the
hurricane of 1938. The second monitor was destroyed in 1990 by a fire
that occurred during restoration. Today, the third monitor affords an
unparalleled view as far away as Fall River, Newport and Providence.

New England Wireless and Steam Museum
The
New England Wireless and Steam Museum is a public, nonprofit (501)
(C)(3) educational institution. It opened in 1964 to preserve the
history of electrical and mechanical engineering, particularly spanning
the period that saw the first central electric power, the airplane,
practical automobile, telephone, radio, X ray, etc. It emphasizes New
England's contribution to these developments. It is run by non-paid
directors and volunteer. There are educational tours and annual public
events such as Yankee Steam-Up.
In its large collection is an
extremely rare George H. Corliss mill steam engine with a 15' flywheel.
It has Hartford Connecticut's first steam electric generating plant,
Providence made; and URI's first steam generating plant, made in Hope
Valley. These machines are operable. It also has the oldest working
radio station in the world.
The museum is on the National Register of Historic Places and has
received numerous prestigious awards. Because of its volunteer staff,
it is open by appointment only, except for special event days.

Sons of the American Revolution
The
John Peck Rathbun Chapter of the Rhode Island Society, Sons of the
American Revolution, is a patriotic, historical and educational
society, dedicated to the memory of those who made the sacrifice of
service during the Revolutionary War. The Society also promotes
fellowship among Revolutionary War descendants. The Society is always
ready to assist those who believe they have a tie to the Revolutionary
War, but cannot prove it.
To qualify for membership, a man must be
18 years of age or over and a direct descendant of an ancestor who
rendered service during the Revolutionary War.
Meetings are held five to six times a year, generally in East Greenwich.

The Surgeon John E. Greene Society
Members
of this society are descendants of Surgeon John Greene (circa
1590-1659), who followed Roger Williams to Rhode Island. Greene became
one of the 12 original proprietors of Providence and founded Warwick in
1643. The Greenes had large families and intermarried with most of the
early settlers of Rhode Island. Today there are thousands of Rhode
Islanders unaware they are descendants of the Greenes. The Society may
be able to help those who can trace their lineage back two or three
generations.
Organized in 1976, the purpose of the Society is to
update the Greene genealogy, printed in 1905, collect memorabilia of
the Greene family, publish a newsletter, save historic Greene buildings
and eventually establish a library museum.

Varnum Continentals
Founded
in 1907, the Varnum Continentals are a patriotic, military and social
organization to "perpetuate the customs, uniform and traditions of the
American Revolution" and to encourage patriotism.
The organization,
which marches in local parades, meets at the Varnum Armory at 8:00 pm
on the second Monday of each month with the exception of July and
August.

Varnum House Museum
Located at 57 Peirce Street, the Varnum House Museum is the Town's most outstanding link to its colonial heritage.
The eight- room mansion was built in 1773 by James Mitchell Varnum, one
of the founders of the Kentish Guards. From its perch on the crest
above Main Street, overlooking Narragansett Bay, the colonial home
provided Varnum and his wife Patty with lavish accommodations and a
headquarters for entertainment. Generals Lafayette and Sullivan were
frequent visitors.
The Varnum Continentals bought the house in 1939, with the idea of
creating an historical museum. The Museum boasts eight large
fireplaces, a restored kitchen, period furniture and a wealth of
colonial items donated by residents of the town and state. Handsome
outdoor gardens are used for wedding receptions and the house serves as
the meeting place for several organizations.
During June, July and August the Museum is open from 10-4pm on Saturday
and Sunday. Admission is $2.00. For special appointments call 884-1776

Varnum Memorial Armory and Military Museum
The
Varnum Memorial Armory at 6 Main Street was built in 1913. The lower
level museum is a must-see for the history buff. Uniforms and armaments
from the Revolution through Vietnam are displayed in a building that
reflects the medieval element in the 19th century picturesque
architecture. Tours are available by appointment. For information call

Business, Civic, Religious & Social Organizations
AARP
IRS
/ AARP Tax Counseling for the Elderly. Free tax assistance for the
elderly and low income individuals is available from the first week in
February until April 15th on each Tuesday at Centreville Bank, 495 Main
Street. Volunteers are trained by the Internal Revenue Service and the
State of Rhode Island Tax Division. We also train interested
volunteers. For more information on additional sites for this free tax

American Association of University Women (A.A.U.W.)
The Warwick-West-Bay Branch of AAUW welcomes any woman or man with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college.
Their goals include continuing education and information on timely
topics as well as support of the arts and involvement in the community
and pertinent legislation.
From September through May meetings are held at 7:00 pm on the 2nd
Thursday of each month in the Doctor's Auditorium of Kent Hospital.
American Legion
The
American Legion is a veteran's organization chartered by the United
States Congress. Local Post 15, located at 1016 Main Street, sponsors
Girls and Boys State, social welfare and athletic programs for
children, fund drives for scholarships and provides rehabilitation
services to veterans and their families. It is also responsible for the
Town's celebration of Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.

Animal Protection League
The East Greenwich Animal Protection League, Inc. (EGAPL) is a
nonprofit organization of volunteers concerned with the rescue and
humane treatment of animals. It is the animal shelter for the town,
which has no animal pound. The League houses animals available for
adoption at the Greenwich Bay Animal Hospital 5732 Post Road, and runs
"Adopt-a-Pet" open houses there on Sundays from 10:30a.m. to 1:00p.m.
With a budget of $125,000 a year and only $25,000 of that provided by
the town, the League conducts various fundraising events throughout the
year to offset the costs of medical care, spaying/neutering and housing
of the animals until adopted. The organization is staffed totally by
volunteers, and monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday at
7:00p.m. in Conference Room B of the E.G. Town Hall. New volunteers are
welcome!

Christian Women's Club
The
West Bay Christian Women's Club is a non-denominational women's club
that meets for lunch every second Thursday from 12:00 - 2:00 pm at the
Quonset "O" Club in North Kingstown. A special feature of interest to
women is presented at each meeting. A free nursery is available. All

Cindy-Wood Garden Club
The Cindy-Wood Garden Club is a member of the Rhode Island Federation
of Garden Clubs with the objectives of gardening education,
encouragement of home and community beautification, promoting better
horticultural practices, supporting all forms of conservation and
related community service activities.
The Club planted and maintains a perennial and butterfly garden at the
Old Jail in East Greenwich, where many Club meetings are held. The garden is recognized as an historic garden by the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
Members meet the third Tuesday of the month from September through June. Programs
include garden planning, horticultural speakers and field trips to
various gardens in Rhode Island and Southern New England. The
Club's community service activities include making and providing
Holiday decorations for area nursing homes, the annual contribution of
new books for the gardening section of the East Greenwich Free Library
and collecting holiday gifts for a local family through the East
Greenwich Housing Authority. The Club has supported the
London Bridge Child Care Center, participating in horticultural
activities with the children and planting a tree on the Center's
grounds. The Club also participates in the annual Arbor Day celebration by planting a tree in a public setting.

Democratic Town Committee
The
East Greenwich Democratic Town Committee was organized to further the
goals of the local Democratic Party. The Committee sponsors guest
speakers and programs to increase knowledge of events at local and
state levels.
Eastern Star
The
purpose of the Order of Eastern Star is to inspire members to think and
act in good character, while living lives of truth, charity, loyalty
and kindness. These qualities are brought forth through charitable
deeds, mutual support and cheerful companionship.
Funds are raised
annually within the membership for numerous projects, such as:
Shriner's Hospitals for Crippled Children, Cancer Research, Arthritis
Fund, Heart Fund, Knights Templar Eye Foundation, etc.
Eastern Star is the largest Fraternal organization in the world to
which both men and women may belong. Women over the age of 18, with
Masonic Affiliations and Master Masons may apply for membership.
Adah Chapter # 15 is the local Eastern Start Chapter, which meets at
7:30 pm every third Monday at the Westminster Unitarian Church, 119
Kenyon Avenue.

East Greenwich Citizens Who Care
This
nonprofit organization was formed in 1983. The goal is to build a
strong network of parents and citizens to construct resources to combat
drug and alcohol use in teenagers, to build self-esteem and to promote
wellness.
To accomplish this several things are needed:
1. Educate parents about the symptoms and effects of substance abuse and the laws governing such abuse.
2. Support school curricula that will provide early drug education, decision-making skills and build self-esteem.
3. Encourage parents to follow uniform guidelines regarding parties, curfews, etc.
4. Initiate a total community effort to address the problem and promote wellness.
5. Provide activities for teens.
6. Be a supportive resource for parents to help find appropriate
agencies and information when they suspect substance abuse in their
children or are dealing with other health/wellness issues.

East Greenwich Leisure Learning
East Greenwich Leisure Learning offers education, entertainment and socializing for adults of all ages. Membership is open to all interested adults, regardless of residency. However total membership is limited by space capacity (171).
The annual program consists of 2 separate 6 week series. A spring series of six consecutive Thursday meetings, beginning in April, and a second six week series beginning in October. Each series features 12 different speakers (2 per day) covering a great variety of topics, with a Q. and A. period following. Morning sessions run from 10:30 to 11:45. Afternoon sessions are from 12:45 until 2:00 pm. Lunch is “brown bag”, (beverage not provided). Programs are held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Parish House on Peirce Street. East Greenwich-Warwick Garden Club
The
East Greenwich - Warwick Garden Club is a member of the Rhode Island
Federation of Garden Clubs. It is dedicated to stimulating interest in
gardening, civic improvement, community involvement and the
conservation of natural resources.
The club has a long and proud
history, having recently celebrated its 75th anniversary with a Gala
Tea at the Sprague Mansion in Cranston.
Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. at the
New England Wireless and Steam Museum on Frenchtown Road in East
Greenwich. Programs include speakers, demonstrations, field trips and

East Greenwich Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge # 19
The East Greenwich FOP welcomes all adult residents and business people of EG who are citizens in good standing.
Through donations, this non-profit organization supports many local
groups such as Special Olympics, the N.E. Jr. Marine Corps and various
police and fire related scholarships and memorial funds. The FOP also
strives for better community relations and community service.
Meetings are held from September to May on the last Tuesday of each
month at the Varnum Armory at 7:00 pm. New members are always welcome.

Golden Ages Club
Golden
Ages club meetings are held at 1:00 p.m. in Swift Gym in East Greenwich
on the first and third Wednesday of the month. No meetings are held in
July or August. Special luncheons begin at noon. The club is extremely
active, sponsoring bus tours, theatre parties, entertainment and coffee
hours with refreshments.

living in East Greenwich, Warwick, West Warwick, Coventry and North

Greenwich Bay Women's Club
Greenwich
Bay Women's Club, a civic organization based in East Greenwich, is
committed to community service through monetary distributions and
"in-kind" donations. Our two primary fundraisers are the Novemberfest
Craft Show in the fall and Clown Town in the Spring. All proceeds are
donated to charitable organizations. Scholarships are also awarded
based on the applicant's community service.

Independent Order of Odd Fellows
Located
at 900 Main Street, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows is a family
fraternity, striving to make the world a better place in which to live.
Our motto is Friendship, Love and Truth. Our objective is to improve
and elevate the character of mankind. The creed is to relieve the
distress, visit the sick, bury the dead and educate the orphans.
The meetings of Odd Fellows are held on the first and third Wednesdays
and the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. The meetings of

Italo-American Women's Club
Meetings
are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Rocky Hill Grange
Hall, 1340 South County Trail. The Club objectives are: fostering a
better understanding between women of Italian descent and all other
nationalities, to preserve the Italian heritage and to help sponsor

League of Women Voters of West Bay
The
League is a non-partisan organization that promotes political
responsibility and participation in government. The League consistently
provides voter registration, voter information and citizen education,
encouraging full public participation in government at all levels.
Positions on issues and governmental policies are taken only after
study and consensus. Any citizen, male or female, 18 years or older may
become a member.
League members have served on local boards,
commissions, councils and school committees. It has advocated low-cost
housing, improved child care, mental health care, public awareness of
and participation in sound management of our natural resources and for
more responsive and responsible government at all levels.

Lions Club
The
East Greenwich Lions Club, a chapter of Lions International, is
composed of men and women over 21 years old who are dedicated to
community service. As sight conservation is one of the major activities
of the club, they provide eye-screening services, help local citizens
with financial aid for their visual impairment needs and provide
glasses for the needy. The Lions have a used Eyeglass Collection Box at
the East Greenwich Post Office to which over 10,000 pairs of eyeglasses
have been donated during the last seven years.
The Lions also
financially support "Camp Mauchatea" an overnight summer camp for
visually impaired children under the age of 18, and the R.I. Lions
Children with Cancer Fund.
Lions are active with local community support projects for those in
need, giving assistance through food baskets during the holidays and
donations to the Community Food Bank.
The club sponsors the annual Hill and Harbour 5K Road Race, a premier
road race held in East Greenwich for over 18 years and an annual Camp
Mauchatea Golf Tournament each summer.
The club encourages persons over 21 to join our chapter and give a few
hours of time each month to help those in the community in need.

Narragansett Bay Quilter's Association
This
state-wide group is open to anyone interested in quilts and quilt
making. The purpose is to revive the art of quilting and provide an
opportunity for learning and sharing of ideas. They sponsor a show
every two years.
Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month
from September to May (with the exception of December) at the Masonic
Temple, 75 Division Street in East Greenwich. For membership

New Neighbors Club
A
not-for-profit social organization whose purpose is to aid new
residents in becoming acquainted with the community and their new
neighborhood. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month
(September through November and January through May) at Christ Church
at the corner of Post Road and Cedar Avenue (a.k.a Main Street).. The
meeting time is 9:30-11:00 am. The December and June meetings are held
at a different time and location. Membership is open to all new

Republican Town Committee
The
purpose of the Republican Town Committee is to promote good government
and elect Republican candidates for local town offices. Membership is
open to all Republicans of voting age.

Rocky Hill Grange
Rocky
Hill Grange is a community service family organization serving the town
of East Greenwich, located on 1340 South County Trail (Route 2). The Grange holds regular meetings on the first or third Thursdays of each month starting at 7:30 pm. The Grange Hall is handicapped accessible.

Rotary Club
Rotary
is an organization of business and professional leaders, men and women,
who are concerned with community service, encouraging high ethical
standards in all vocations, working towards world peace and
understanding, and who enjoy the fellowship generated through such
service.
The Club promotes and is involved in may charitable and
civic projects, provides for over 40 charitable organizations, gives
scholarships worth $17,500 to East Greenwich students and provides to
the community, free of charge, the East Greenwich telephone directory.
The club is part of Rotary International, which consists of more than 32,000 clubs in 162 countries.

Sunshine Society
The
East Greenwich Branch of the International Sunshine Society is a
philanthropic organization which loans needed hospital equipment to
town residents. Members also provide nursing homes with favors for the
holidays, make cancer dressings and sponsor other community service
projects.

The
Robert L. Hoover Memorial Post 8018, Veterans of Foreign Wars, meets at
the Post Home, 2608 South County Trail, at 7:30 pm on the second Monday

Christ Church
Evangelical Covenant
Christ
Church worships at 1025 Main Street at the corner of Post Road and
Cedar Ave. in East Greenwich. Christ Church seeks to be a place where

There are six worship opportunities each week.
Three identical worship services are offered Sunday mornings at 8:30,
10:00 and 11:30am, with Nursery and Christian education classes for all

Sanctuary is Sunday night, now offering identical services at 5:00 and
7:00pm. Sanctuary is a service designed for the emerging generation,
experiencing worship through scripture, music, spoken word and the
creative arts.

XL Student Ministries offers programs for Junior and Senior high.
Deeper is the large group and discussion night Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30pm.
Christ Church is home for the Rhode Island Christian Singles, the ALPHA
Course (a basic introduction to the Christian faith), and Family Care
Ministries, offering marriage enrichment, parenting classes, addiction
recovery and practical help for those experiencing the pain of loss
through death, divorce or financial struggles.

The
First Baptist Church is a welcoming community of faith that enjoys
being together in worship and in a wide variety of study and fellowship
opportunities. Among these opportunities are: a dynamic Sunday School,

At. St. Luke's Episcopal Church, all are welcome to help fulfill the
current mission of this church, founded in 1834 and going strong in the
21st century! Located at the corner of Church and Peirce Streets,
Sunday services are at 8 and 10am. Tuesday Healing Service is at 12
noon and Wednesday Eucharist is at 7am. A Centering Prayer Group meets
on Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm.
Our Church School program on Sunday features a nursery which welcomes
children at both the 8 and 10am services. The church school classes for
grades 3-6 meet at 9am. Younger children from preschool through 2nd
grade meet at 10am. Our program for teens, Journey to Adulthood,
includes three youth groups from grades 7-12 which meet at 9am. All
church school classes listed here are on Sunday mornings.
St. Luke's also offers a music program featuring Angel Choir for ages
4-6, St. Cecilia Choir for ages 7-13, St. Nicholas Choir for ages 14-16
and Canterbury Choir for anyone 16 and older! The Jubilate Ringers are
a handbell choir who perform frequently in the community. The music
program is associated with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) and
offers this comprehensive achievement program for all choirs. Our
choirs participate in traditional English Evensong, Hymn Festivals,
concerts, youth cantatas and Sunday worship.
St. Luke's is also home to many community outreach groups, including
the East Greenwich Senior Services, The Music School of the RI
Philharmonic, Music on the Hill Concert Series and numerous recovery

Lady of Mercy Parish, founded in 1867, is located on Fourth Avenue. The
weekend Mass schedule is Saturday afternoon at 5:00 and Sunday morning

UNITED METHODIST
The East Greenwich United Methodist Church is located at 214 Main
Street. We have two different worship services each Sunday. Both
services are held in the sanctuary. Our 8:30 A.M. service is a
traditional service, featuring the Chancel Choir. At 10:00 A.M. we have
a contemporary worship service. Our Praise Choir, "Heaven Sent," leads
worship under the leadership of Kim Wertz, our Director of Music.
Children are invited to attend Sunday School in Colby Hall after the
Children's Moment with Carol Reale, our Director of Christian
Education. Childcare for infants and toddlers is also available
downstairs.
Adult Bible Studies and classes meet on Sundays at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.
