Town Government
The voters of East Greenwich, through a "Home Rule Charter" approved in 1972, adopted a Council-Manager form of government, providing for a five member legislative body with a professional administrator. The legislative body is styled after the traditional New England form of government, with a five member Town Council, elected at large for two-year terms. The president and vice-president are elected by the Council.
Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7:00 pm in the Town Hall.
The Town Manager is selected by the Town Council and serves at their discretion. The Manager is charged with the administrative responsibility of the Town Government.
A Town Moderator is also elected every two years. The seven members of the School Committee serve staggered terms, with elections held every four years.
The Town Moderator presides over the Financial Town Meeting each year in the month of June. The meeting approves the Town budget and levying of taxes. Town residents who are qualified electors are eligible to vote.
