Rocky Hill School Recognizes National Volunteer Month

    April 18, 2016
Community service is promoted in all grades at Rocky Hill School and this April, during National Volunteer Month, our students are busy giving back to their community. Parents and students alike are giving their time, money, and efforts through these exciting community service initiatives:

    Interact Arcade

National Volunteer Month was launched on Friday, April 1 with the Interact Club’s Arcade Night. More than 75 students participated and the event raised $342 for the club’s 3D prosthetic hand project. Since then, Rocky Hill School has begun to collaborate with New England Institute of Technology to help print 3D prosthetic limbs for children amputees. The Interact Club is a grade 7-12 student-run community service club in partnership with the East Greenwich Rotary.

    North Kingstown Community Food Bank

As part of the Interact Arcade, students donated 185 toiletry and food items for the North Kingstown Community Food Bank. The Interact Club will tour the food bank’s facility when they deliver the donated items.

    Leadership and Sportsmanship Conference

On Saturday, April 9, Rocky Hill School hosted a free conference for Rhode Island 8th grade students. The conference, which focused on leadership and sportsmanship in athletics, was run by Rocky Hill School student volunteers with the guidance and participation of faculty, and included guest presenters Coach Mitch Switzer from Bryant University, RHS alum Sarah Knowles ’08, RHS parent Vanessa Weiner of ResilientKids, and former NE Patriots offensive guard Joe Andruzzi. The program was funded by a grant from the RI Interscholastic League and the RHS Parent Teacher League.

Project GOAL Fundraiser: Sock Junkie for Athletics

At the urging of seventh grader Ella D’Arcy, the RHS athletic department and school store now sell high quality RHS-branded athletic crew socks. Ella and members of the Junior National Honor Society are working to help promote sales. Estimated proceeds of $1,200 will support athletics and help sponsor a Rocky Hill School team in the Project GOAL charity soccer tournament in May. Providence-based Project GOAL’s mission is to facilitate the development of Rhode Island’s underserved youth through after-school tutoring and soccer-related programs.

    ALS 5K Race

On Saturday, April 16, the East Greenwich Rotary will host the Scott Carlson Memorial ALS 5K. Rocky Hill School students from the Interact Club and Junior National Honor Society will volunteer their time at the race.

    Lower School Service Learning Squad

The Lower School Service Learning Squad has been making mindfulness glitter jars and homemade cards to be included in “happy packs” for long-term patients at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The Service Learning Squad will complete the project in April and deliver them to Hasbro.

    Earth Day Clean-Up

In honor of Earth Day 2016, the Upper School’s Environmental Monitoring Club and the Interact Club will hold a clean-up of the School’s waterfront. Groups of students led by teachers and/or Upper School students will pick up litter, including paper, plastic, and cans around campus and along the Land of Fires Nature Trail. Materials will be collected, bagged, and properly transported to the landfill. The clean-up will run from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Volunteers are welcome and are asked to meet at Campbell Center.
